February 2012: Darin DeField

During the month of February, America directs its attention to the lives and historical
contributions of Americans of African decent. The “Afrocentricity” exhibition at
LITM-Lounge and Gallery Space will showcase the collection of works by Darin DeField
who has established himself as one of the most influential figures of the art and culture
scene in Jersey City.

Darin DeField is best known for his mixed media collage art; working with cut paper
and mixed media elements that explore race, gender, sexuality, and identity. His
most acclaimed works are his “Head Series”. Many of these heads seem to be fixed
representations of indigenous tribal masks and many can be interpreted as spiritual
leaders, masters and gurus that are derived from African sculpture as archaeological
artifacts being recovered.

His collection of works have found their way into private art collections both here and
abroad. He has exhibited works at The Merrill Lynch Corporation in New York, the
Case Museum in Jersey City and Goldman Sachs Corporate Offices in New Jersey. He
has also spoken in reference to his work at Essex County College (Newark campus) and
The Jersey City Museum.

Mr. DeField has served as both director and curator for Nobis and Nuradeen Galleries,
notably installing such exhibitions as “Plantation Lullabies” and “The Assassination of
Whistling Rufus”, which has challenged imposed boundaries on art, spirit, justice and
culture.
